Taking the Private out of Private Equity

It seems hard to discuss Private Equity and Venture Capital without mentioning how private the industry is. The PE/VC industry does not seem to be as private as commentators perceive. Significantly, this new paradigm for the PE/VC industry points to an opportunity for technology disruption. At the same time, they point out, it is clear that PE/VC firms yield a lot of power. We have identified over 7,500 SEC filings directly relating to PE/VC firms raising funds and managing their firms in the past few years.

Trusted Insight, the Social Network for LPs, Looks to Chapter Two

Already, Data Collective, Founders Fund, RRE Ventures, Morado Ventures, Real Ventures, and 500 Startups are among those that have invested an undisclosed amount of money in Trusted Insight. )Trusted Insight also has numerous new features up its sleeve, including “certifications” that help to highlight who is truly expert in what, regardless of their academic credentials. Either way, Bangash sounds confident in the network effects that Trusted Insight now enjoys, noting that “someone could develop a nicer LinkedIn, too, but people probably wouldn’t use it.” The trick going forward is turning Trusted Insight from a “transformational company,” as he calls it, into a transactional one. To wit, Bangash says Trusted Insight is poised to double or even triple its user base in the next year, as well as to increase the data it’s managing by five times. A second option includes partnering with another outfit (Bangash says Trusted Insight is “talking with two or three players”) or raising a big fat round of funding, which seems like the most likely scenario.

This chart shows the future of venture capital

As VC evolves from venture capital to venture platform, he'll be there waiting. Serious venture investment is not required in the earliest stages of a company's life, so angel investors have been getting the best seed deals. It echoes statements made by Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures, who predicts that venture capital as we know it won't be around in ten years. Others, like First Round Capital, are building a community-driven platform that allows its portfolio companies to share knowledge and help each other. The dramatic drop in the cost of creating a company over the last decade ($2 million in the late '90s to maybe $5,000 today) has had an obvious effect on the venture capital world.
